Noël / Christmas

Noël est une période très importante en Islande. Les islandais commence à fêter Noël en fin Novembre jusqu’à début janvier. Ils illuminent la ville et accroche des sapins sur les façades des maisons.

Les islandais sont très attachés aux légendes et contes.

Une des légendes de noël est les Yule Lads.Christmas is an important period in Iceland. Icelanders start to celebrate it end of November until beginning of January. They light up the city and hung Christmas trees on the walls.

Icelanders love myths and legends.

One of the Christmas legends is the Yule Lads.

The Yules Lads are 13 father Christmas. They are said to be the children of the trolls Grýla et Leppalúði. Each of them come and go in a special order and have a special role.


Les Yules Lads sont les 13 pères noël islandais. Ils sont dit être les enfants des troll Grýla et Leppalúði. Chacun d’entre eux arrivent et partent dans un ordre précis. Ils ont chacun un rôle particular.



Stekkjastaur arrive le 12 décembre et repart le 25, il embête les moutons.
Giljagaur arrive le 13 décembre et repart le 26, il se cache dans l’étable pour voler du lait.
Stúfur arrive le 14 décembre et repart le 27, il vole les poelles pour manger les restes.
Þvörusleikir arrive le 15 décembre et repart le 18, il lèche la cuillère.
Pottasleikir arrive le 16 décembre et repart le 29, il lèche les pots contenant des restes.
Askasleikir arrive le 17 décembre et repart le 30, il lèche les bols.
Hurðaskellir arrive le 18 décembre et repart le 31. Il claque les portes
Skyrgámur arrive le 19 décembre et repart le 1er janvier. Il vole du skyr (le fromage blanc islandais)
Bjúgnakrækir arrive le 20 décembre et repart le 2 janvier. Il vole des saucices
Gluggagægir arrive le 21 décembre et repart le 3 janvier. Il est voyeur. Il regarde les habitant par la fenêtre.
Gáttaþefur arrive le 22 décembre et repart le 4 janvier. Il renifle les portes.
Ketkrókur arrive le 23 décembre et repart le 5 janvier. Il a un crochet en métal pour voler de la viande.
Kertasníkir arrive le 24 décembre et repart le 6 janvier. Il vole les bougie.

Hurðaskellir arrives December 18th and go the 31st, he slam the doors.
Skyrgámur arrives December 19th and go the 1st of January, he steals skyr (Icelandic cream cheese)
Bjúgnakrækir arrives December 20th and go the 2nd of January, he steals the sausages.
Gluggagægir arrives December 21st and go the 3rd of January, he looks through the windows. Gáttaþefur arrives December 22nd and go the 4th of January, He smells the doors.
Ketkrókur arrives December 23rd and go the 5th of January, He has a crochet to steal meat.
Kertasníkir arrives December 24th and go the 6th of January, He steals candles.



Il y a aussi … le chat des Yule. Il mange les enfants qui n’ont pas reçu de vêtements pour noël.

La mère des ces 13 enfants, met les enfants qui n’ont pas été sage dans un sac avant de les manger.

Bon, cela donne un côté sauvage à l’histoire mais bon, c’est l’Islande.

Sinon, il y a aussi des marchés de noël et des villages qui font des visites spéciales pour noël, pour voir l’histoire de l’Islande.

La cuisine aussi de noël, avec leurs pains avec la découpe en « feuille » traditionnel.


There is also the cat of the Yule. He eats children that did not receive clothes for Christmas.

The mother of those 13 children puts the children that have not been nice in a bag before eating them.

There is a wild side of that story but, it is Iceland.

Other way, there is also Christmas markets and villages that do special visit for Christmas to see Iceland in an historical way.

There is also the Christmas cooking, with their traditional bread cut with a « leaf » shape.

Chorale/Choir

Et oui, je n’ai pas pu oublier le chant. Je me suis donc inscrite à la Chorale de l’Université d’Islande. Après une audition, j’ai été recontactée et j’ai fais mes premiers pas dans le chant en islandais.
Il faut avouer que ce n’est vraiment pas évident de chanter en islandais : les mots ne se prononcent pas comme ils sont écrit. Un « hv » devient un « kv » à l’oreille. Mais bon, après WE consacré au chant, et un peu de travail, me voila adaptée à chanter en islandais.

Yes, I was not able to stop singing. Therefore, I went to the University’s Choir. After an audition, I was contacted and I did my first steps in Icelandic lyrics.
I must say it was not easy at the beginning: words are not pronounced the same way. A « hv » is pronounced as a « kv ». But, after a Choir camp, a bit of work, here am I able to sing in Icelandic.

J’ai déjà chanté à la messe, dans le concert de la chorale et devant le président de l’Islande pour le concert de noël. Nous avons enregistré un CD et je vais peut être avoir des concerts promotionnel. Prochain concert de prévu : Carmina Burana !!

I sang at the mass, at the Choir’s concert and in front of the President of Iceland for the Christmas concert. We recorded a CD and we will maybe do promotional concerts. Next concert: Carmina Burana!!

Blue Lagoon

Le Blue Lagoon est un lieu incontournable pour toute visite en Islande. Il s’agit d’une station thermale à 45 mins de Reykjavik. Le prix est un peu cher pour les touristes (28€ l’entrée sans le transport), mais cela vaut le coup d’y aller une fois.
Il est préférable de venir avec son maillot de bain et sa serviette de bain, mais il est toutefois possible de louer le tout au près du Blue Lagoon.
Un bassin intérieur relis l’extérieur pour éviter de se retrouver à l’air le temps de l’entrée dans l’eau. Il y a alors différent endroit dans le bassin : cascades pour se masser les épaules, masque de boue à se mettre sur le visage (ET PAS LES CHEVEUX!!). Il y a aussi un hammam et un sauna. Il y a des courants d’eau plus au moins chaud très agréable pour se détendre.
Il y a aussi un bar flottant où l’on peut payer grâce à son bracelet (on paie alors à la sortie du Blue Lagoon)
Finalement, pour tous les fan des produits de beauté, il est possible d’en acheter à la sortie (dont la boue miraculeuse pour la peau).

Un petit moment bien agréable.



The Blue Lagoon is a « must go » place for every visit in Iceland. It is a geothermal spa at 45 minutes of Reykjavik. It is a bit expensive (28€ without the transport) but it is nice to go once.
It is better to have your swimsuit and towel, but it is possible to rent one at the Blue Lagoon.
A internal basin link the external basin to avoid the fresh air the time to go in the water. There is different places in the basin : a cascade to massage your shoulders, some mud to put on your face (AND NOT YOUR HAIRS) There is also a hamman and a sauna. There is some current of hot water and some of cold water very nice to distress yourself.
There is also a floating bar where you can but some drinks with your bracelet and pay at the end when you go out.
To finish, for all the fans of beauty products, it is possible to buy some at the boutique of the Blue Lagoon (even the mud of the basin)

Université / University

Des petites nouvelles après un long moment d’absence. Et oui, j’étais très occupée. Entre mes devoirs et mes activités, je me suis rendue un peu absente de mon blog. Mais me voici.

News after a long silence. I have been very occupied. Between homework and activities, I had to leave a little bit my blog. But here am I.



Je fais mes études à l’Université d’Islande. Elle est située à Reykjavik, à environ 10 minutes de ma guesthouse.
Elle possède 6 différentes branches d’études. Je suis dans la branche des sciences sociales en Droit.

I do my studies at the University of Iceland. It is in Reykjavik, at 10 minutes of my guesthouse.
It has 6 different branches of studies. I am in the social science branch, in Law.



L’Université est très étendue. Nous avons de nombreux bâtiments, une cafétéria, un cinéma, des bibliothèques, pas mal de choses.
Je suis dans le bâtiment « Lögberg ». Notre bâtiment comporte des salles de cours, une bibliothèque, les bureaux de nos enseignants, et une salle d’études.

The University is quite big. We have a lot of buildings, a cafeteria, a movie theatre, libraries, a lot of things.
I am in the « Lögberg » building. In our building, there is class rooms, a library, our teachers offices, and a student room for work.



L’Université est très bien organisée. Il est très facile de faire les taches administratives, surtout avec les machines à tickets pour faire la queue aux bureaux. Le personnel est beaucoup plus gentil avec les étudiants et prêt à les aider, ce qui est très agréable.

The University is well organised. It is easy to do all the administrative tasks, especially with the ticket machines for the queues. All the staff is nice and ready to help students, what is very pleasant.



La méthode n’est pas la même qu’en France. Ici, nous avons peu de cours, mais beaucoup de travail à ma maison. Nous devons lire le manuel de cours (qui coûte cher) et faire des mini-mémoires. En cours, un power point est affiché et le professeur fait sa lecture. Les power points et les documents de cours sont en ligne sur un réseau de la fac « Ugla ». Les professeurs sont très disponibles et nous pouvons les contacter par mail où les voir à leur permanences.

The method isn’t the same that in France. Here, we don’t have a lot of courses, but a lot of work at home. We have to read the course book (that is expensive) and do papers. In class, the teacher do his course with a power point presentation. The power point and the courses documents are online on the university web « Ugla ». The teacher are really there to help us as we can contact them by email or see them when they do open moment at their office.

Mon Studio/ My studio

Après quelques jours en « dortoir » voici mon studio.
After a few days in a « dormitory » here is my studio.
Pas très loin l’un de l’autre, ce qui est pratique pour transporter les affaires.
Not to far from each other, easy to transport our stuff.
La porte s’ouvre sur une entrée. En face la salle de bain.

At the end a little tv room and 2 windows that show the road.

Le tout avec un propriétaire adorable qui est vraiment là pour nous aider. Des colocataires dans les autres studio adorable.
All of this with an adorable landowner that is there to help you. Nice housemates in the other studios.
